The Cavalor Hoof Aid Special is a concentrated feed supplement for horses and ponies with weak or brittle hooves. The formula combines biotin with the amino acids DL-methionine and L-lysine, plus MSM, brewer’s yeast, vitamins and trace elements. You use it when you want to add specific nutrients to the ration over a longer period. Because hoof horn grows slowly, this is a supplement you think about in months rather than weeks.
About this supplement
Biotin is the nutrient most closely associated with hoof supplements. Hoof Aid Special contains 375 mg of biotin per kg, which makes it a concentrated formula. New hoof wall grows down from the coronary band and only becomes visible after weeks; that pace sets how long you feed the supplement.
Alongside biotin, the formula supplies DL-methionine and L-lysine. Methionine is a sulphur-containing essential amino acid and lysine is essential too: your horse has to take them in through the ration. There is also MSM, which provides sulphur, and inactivated brewer’s yeast.
The vitamins and trace elements are deliberately split across different pellets. The beige pellets contain copper and zinc compounds among others, the other pellets contain MSM, B vitamins, vitamin C and choline chloride. By separating those components physically, Cavalor aims to limit interactions between vitamins and trace elements.
For ponies the recommended amount is 50 g per day, for horses 150 g per day. One measuring cup holds 100 g. Cavalor advises feeding the supplement for at least three months, since hoof growth is slow. After that the daily amount can be halved as a maintenance dose.
Composition and key ingredients: DL-methionine 5%, L-lysine 0.36%, brewer’s yeast 2.5%, MSM 3%, calcium 2.87%, biotin 375 mg/kg, vitamin B1 400 mg/kg, vitamin B2 480 mg/kg, calcium D-pantothenate 1,000 mg/kg, vitamin B6 100 mg/kg, vitamin B12 10 mg/kg, vitamin C 22,500 mg/kg, niacin 1,500 mg/kg, choline chloride 2,750 mg/kg, copper sulphate pentahydrate 311 mg/kg, dicopper chloride hydroxide 154 mg/kg, zinc sulphate monohydrate 825 mg/kg and zinc chloride hydroxide monohydrate 410 mg/kg.
